The next Leg

We decided to head out a little earlier than originally planned and break up the next leg of our journey.  Our next destination is in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.  We prefer to keep our travel days limited to 4 hours of travel or less but this leg was going to be about 6 hours.  Lynn was visiting with a friend while we were in Childress, TX and they had said their farewells after dinner.  So we both decided there was nothing more to keep us in Childress and we got the RV unhooked and headed out to split up the next leg.

As soon as we got under way, Lynn started scoping out possible overnight stops along the route.  After our success at the Loves Travel Stop in Oklahoma, it was an easy choice to find a few along the route and we booked a spot in Dalhart, TX.  The trip went pretty smooth other than the road surface that is.  The Road texture was such that it resonated throughout the RV.  After over an hour, we eventually reached an area where the road was smooth and the rest of the trip to Dalhart was quietly enjoyed.

The view went from desolate plains to rolling hills and mesas.  A nice change as we were looking forward to seeing the Rockies rise above the horizon soon.

I wasn't expecting much and didn't need much since it was just going to be an overnight stop but I was expecting a level spot.  Don't get me wrong, they did a nice job laying out the RV hookup spots but the level was off just enough on an uphill angle that when I leveled the RV, It lifted the front tires off the ground.  So I begrudgingly lowered the front down far enough to get the tires back on the ground and called it a night.

We awoke the next morning at 8:00,  I went inside and picked up some breakfast sandwiches, (no cooking-no dishes 😊)  drained the tanks and hit the road.  This now meant we only had a couple hours of travel time to make it to Trinidad Lake State Park.  As we were about to cross over into Mountain time, it meant we had plenty of time to relax and enjoy the drive at a leisurely pace.  When we finally got to Colorado, I just had to stop and take in a few minutes of the view.

I had planned to make a stop in Raton, NM before crossing into Colorado but there was some construction going on and I missed the exit.  We just took a 15 minute break at the first roadside overlook and finished the last 20 minute drive into the park.  Lynn went into the ranger station, got our park pass and we made the drive up to Carpios Ridge Campground.

OMG, My wife does know how to pick a good spot.  This will be our view for the next couple days.

I'll update again in a few days when we make our way across Colorado and the Gunnison National Forest.  Please leave a comment to let me know you got here or better yet contact us, (the signal is good enough I was able to put this post together and upload it) I'd love to get some feedback, suggestions, answer your questions, or just catch up.  We'd love to hear from you.

  1. I have to say that LovesRVStop in Dalhart was not the most restful sleep. It was right on the highway and train tracks, busy all night. And smelled like a barnyard. But we accomplished what we meant to do which was break up the long day, manage all our tanks levels, etc. And we'll sleep like babies in the mountains tonight.
